Established in 1957, Chittagong Medical College (CMC) is a government medical college in Bangladesh founded by the former Prime Minister Hossain Shahid Sohrawardyn. During that time, only 120 beds ready for the patients and there is the outpatient services. At that time the young hospital housed only the Departments of Surgery and Gynecology and Obstetrics. Today, CMC is a center for the medical studies in undergraduate and postgraduate level and its becomes the specialized hospitals services to the publics.
The present purpose-built six-storied CMC runs big outpatient departments in the specialties like Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, skin and venereal diseases, Clinical Pathology, General surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Radiotherapy, Radiology and Dentistry with an average turnover in excess of 2000 a day.
As years passed, new treatment facilities kept being added for the in and outpatients.
Admission in MBBS, BDS & Post Graduate Courses
The admission in MBBS, BDS and Post Graduate Courses are on the basis of merit where 175 students to MBBS and 50 students to BDS are eligible annually. Both male and female students are eligible for admission and only 10 foreign nationals students can apply for the admission. They are selected for admission through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health and family Welfare and for most of them the tuition fees are waived.
Every year, eligibility and all other admission related matters are determined by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Bangladesh. The candidate must at least have Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC) examination as a basic requirement for admission in a Medical and a Dental collage. The subjects that are compulsory to be taken in HSC are Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
There are 31 Post Graduate Courses in different disciplines running in CMC. The selection of students in various post graduate courses is done by the local admission committee under the directives of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and DGHS.
