January 16, 1883, Marmara University was established under the name Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i-Alisi is one of the eldest educational institutions in Turkey. It first started with just a house that located Istanbul High School for Girls in Cagoglu. Marmara University affiliated with the Commercial Agriculture, Forestry and Mining industry with 13 people graduates matriculated in 1887.
The school then expanded its operation on 21 September 1889 with the Education Ministry but the school was closed in 1893 due to the idea that it would be reformed and reopened in the near future. Then, four years later on 15 October 1897, the school was reopened and from this date, the university has provided the education.
It was then known as the Istanbul Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy in 1959, the institute became officially known as Marmara University in 1982 and took its place among Turkish Institutes of Higher Education
Marmara University starts its education in the 1982-1983 academic year which consisted of 9 faculties, 1 school, 1 institute and the number increase to 16 faculties, 9 schools, and 11 institutes today. The number of currently operating associate and degree courses at the university is 199.
Marmara University becomes the most vital institutes of higher education in Turkey today shown by the total of close to 3000 academic staff and more than 70,000 students. Marmara University also is the only multilingual university in Turkey with five different languages which are Turkish, English, French, German and Arabic.
